A LONDON couple have enjoyed a fitting finale to 2012 – by getting engaged in the Boston Hall, writes Kenny Paterson.

James Dicker, 26, proposed to Kate Pierpoint in the Ettrick hall while attending the traditional Hogmanay ceilidh, just an hour before the bells signalled the start of 2013.

And to huge cheers from the capacity audience of 90, which included her mum Louise, dad Steve and sisters Jenny and Helen, Kate said yes.

Kate’s family have connections to Selkirk, making the location of the proposal extra special.

The 25-year-old told The Wee Paper: “I had no idea he was going to do it, but we have been going to the ceilidh at the Boston Hall for 15 years, so it was really nice.

“James had previously asked where he could propose to me, and I said in the Boston Hall on New Year’s Eve would be ideal, as it is very important to my family.

“He said ‘I think that may be too soon’, so when he did propose I was shellshocked.

“He couldn’t actually ask the question because he was so emotional, but when he opened the box to show the ring it was quite obvious what he was going to say.”

Kate’s mum Louise lived in the Back Row in Selkirk with her late parents Rita and James Murray, before moving to London. However, the family bought a holiday home on the Crosslee estate and have returned regularly ever since.

Kate added: “It is very sad my grandparents are no longer here, but I still have cousins living in Selkirk.

“We are looking to get married in summer next year, and my dream is for it to be in Traquair House.”

Louise told us: “It was a shock when James asked us if he could marry Kate, but it was a very nice surprise. We always come up to the holiday home for Hogmanay, so it was special for the family that James proposed in the Boston Hall.”

Boston Hall chair Gordon Harrison said: “What a wonderful way to get the girl of your dreams.”
