Election move?

SELKIRK Community Council elections could be on the move, writes Kenny Paterson.

Secretary Alistair Pattullo is to discuss with Scottish Borders Council’s community council liaison officer the possibility of shifting the process forward a month to May instead of the traditional June date.

Mr Pattullo said: “At the moment the elections seem to clash with the Common Riding and a lot of people are away, so by moving from June to May we may get more interest.”

Twelve community councillors were elected for a four-year term after the last election in June 2009, but Gordon Edgar, who topped the poll, stepped down after being voted in as an SBC councillor last year. The 2009 ballot proved unpopular with Souters, as just six per cent of the eligible electorate took part.

Mr Edgar polled 197 votes, followed by David Bethune (175), Mr Pattullo (171) and John Munro (163).

John Howie was the only community councillor not to gain re-election, while new members were Wilma Gunn and Graham Easton, who has since been promoted to the post of chairman.

The community council meets monthly alongside the three SBC councillors responsible for Selkirkshire – Mr Edgar, Vicky Davidson and Michelle Ballantyne.

The matter will be discussed further at next month’s community council meeting.
