Flat plans for former Selkirk mill

THE former High Mill on Dunsdale Road could be turned into 16 flats.

London-based developer Matthew Claridge has submitted an application to convert the four storey building, which dates back to 1838 and is B listed.

In a statement on behalf of Mr Claridge submitted to Scottish Borders Council’s planning department, a spokesperson said: “High Mill’s condition continues to deteriorate and it is felt that if left in its dilapidated state that this would deter potential developers.

“Therefore our client is pursuing purchasing the High Mill from the Queens & Lord Treasurers’ Remembrancers, in order that he has more control over the surrounding properties for future development.”

Mr Claridge has already received permission in 2007 to turn the adjacent Forest Mill into 14 flats.

The High Mill development would include car parking for 18 vehicles – plus 11 spaces at Station Road – if successful.

Community council chairman Graham Easton said: “I would rather see an empty building brought back into use than left to deteriorate.”

A decision is expected on the planning bid at the start of January 2013.
