Greg’s memory honoured
Winning spark energy captain Johnny Muir receives the trophy from Ray Fenton
TWO years since the death of popular Selkirk sportsman Greg Alexander, two businesses in the town have pulled on their football boots in his honour.
Teams from Spark Energy and HGS, where Greg worked for a spell, tackled one another on Sunday at the 3G Netherdale Arena in Galashiels, exactly 24 months after the 23-year-old passed away.
And it was the Spark side who picked up the trophy, winning 3-2 thanks to an injury time goal.
A total of £225 was raised for both Melrose Football Club and the Margaret Kerr Palliative Care Unit at Borders General Hospital.
In a joint statement, Raymond Fenton of Melrose FC and Graham Godsell of Spark Energy, praised the players for their generosity, after each made donations to the cause.

They said: “We cannot thank everyone enough for their efforts.
“We hope that this, the second annual match, will not be the last and that we can attract more players to future games.”
In a hard-fought match, HGS took an early lead through a very well-struck shot from the edge of the box by Rory Twase which nestled in the top right corner of the Spark goal.
Colin Turnbull levelled the score with a superb volley from a corner, and the big defender put the Spark team into the lead when he netted yet another stunning volley from a perfectly weighted Scott Rodger cross. The equalising HGS goal came from a Malky Smith penalty following the craziest goalmouth scramble, which involved both posts and the crossbar being hit before Spark captain Johnny Muir accidentially handled the ball on the line.
The remainder of the match was wide open, with both teams creating many chances but it was Jory Robertson’s first time volley which sealed the win for Spark.
Greg Alexander collapsed and died in the early hours of March 3, 2011.
The soldier had previously played football for Selkirk Victoria and team-mates honoured his memory by printing his nickname Mallet on the back of their shirts for the club’s Collie Cup final win against St Boswells.
