Grown-ups who delight in children’s holiday club…

The holiday club that takes place during the last week of the school break has become a regular and anticipated event in Selkirk and is always an exciting time for the churches in Selkirk and the Valleys.

Invitations to the club’s Going for Gold went to schoolchildren before the holidays. This year’s theme is centred on the Olympics.

It is so important for children to hear the good news that God loves them very much and chooses each one to be His special child. Unlike the Olympic competitors who have had to work hard to represent their countries, we don’t need to prove ourselves good enough to be part of God’s family: He loves us no matter what.

A couple of people recalled how important the holiday club has been in their lives. A member of St John’s Episcopal Church commented: “The holiday club means a lot to me because in a way it was responsible for me returning to church.

“My daughter walked past the church every day and asked me what it was like inside. She had received an invitation to go to the holiday club before the summer so I asked one of the leaders whose name was on the invitation which church they went to and if we could go with them: that was 10 years ago and I have been a regular church attender since.

“I became a leader at the holiday club the following year and learned so much about God, the Bible and how to pray. I remember being particularly impressed with the teenage leaders and how strong their faith was. The organisers every year came up with new and fun ways to learn about God and the Bible.

“My daughter went every year until she was old enough too to become a junior leader, something which she is repeating this year. The holiday club is always hard work and exhausting by the end of the week for the leaders, but so worthwhile.”

A member of Selkirk Baptist Church said: ‘I have talked many times about what a great privilege it is to be part of running Selkirk Holiday Club, especially when it was such an important part of what introduced me to church when I was a child.

“I vividly remember the unadulterated joy experienced when crawling hand over hand beneath a brightly coloured parachute, seeing just how much icing sugar and how many sweeties you can cram on to a digestive biscuit and the clammy, cold face-painting sponge wielded by an ever-patient leader as I squirmed during my metamorphosis into a tiger.

“Holiday club holds so many fond memories for me from childhood to adulthood and I know that without it my life might have taken a very different turn.

“I am always hugely thankful to all those who have made the holiday club what it is over so many years and who continue to support it now.”

Children of primary school age who have started school are warmly welcomed to join in this year. Doors open in Connections, Back Row on Monday at 9.45am and the club runs from 10am to noon, Monday to Friday. A special family BBQ will be held on Thursday evening.

All the leaders are looking forward enthusiastically to having fun with the children while sharing God’s love through the activities on offer.
