Supermarket price gap

I have long suspected food prices at our two supermarkets are high. Last week I shopped at Asda and Tesco in Galashiels, buying 54 food items at a cost of £62.53.

To compare this basket of shopping with the prices in Selkirk, I visited both the Co-op and Sainsbury's to check prices on the exact range of food items that I had purchased in Galashiels.

The results were: Co-op: 90.75; Sainsbury's: 89.88. This means that there is a saving by shopping in Galashiels of 28.22 (Co-op) or 27.35 (Sainsbury's).

For those who, in these difficult times, have money to burn, by all means continue to shop in Selkirk; but for those who are on fixed incomes, perhaps you should shop in Galashiels, and have the 27 to 28 in your wallet. It is cetainly food for thought!
