Call for our own yellow peril

A TRAFFIC warden solely for Selkirk should be employed to tackle the town’s parking problems, writes Kenny Paterson.

That is the view of community councillor Wilma Gunn, as Monday’s monthly meeting yet again heard of issues surrounding illegally-parked vehicles across the Royal Burgh.

At present the warden responsible for Selkirk also covers Hawick and Jedburgh, but Mrs Gunn feels too many motorists are getting away with unauthorised parking.

Mrs Gunn said: “The council should employ a traffic warden for Selkirk and the money they bring in could go towards the good of the town.

“We don’t see the warden enough at the moment and that means people are getting away with parking illegally.”

SBC councillor Gordon Edgar said the move was unlikely, but admitted there were traffic issues in the town, including problems connected to the size of articulated lorries passing through Selkirk’s narrow streets.

Mr Edgar added: “There are concerns all over Selkirk about parking.

“The problem is our streets were designed for horse and cart. Up to a certain point, we have to accept what we have got.

“Unfortunately, there are a lot more vehicles on the roads now and the worrying thing is this is going to get worse.”
