Sun shines on Yarrow and Ettrick Show
Sunshine and sheep coupled with cattle and craik and horses and hospitality with a good measure of music thrown in – that was Yarrow and Ettrick Show.
In a year of dismal rain that saw a number of agricultural shows cancelled or curtailed, the Yarrow and Ettrick Pastoral Society weathered the summer storms and was rewarded with a magificent day at Philiphaugh on the outskirts of Selkirk.
It was a day when truly the country came to town (almost) and the town came to the country.
Show secretary Anne Turnbull enthused: “There was a great crowd through the gate, the weather was wonderful and we had an excellent president in Alan Cowens of Old Mill Farm at Philiphaugh. We could not have asked for more – it was brilliant.”
It was not only the crowds that flocked to the show. The sheep classes were strongly contested in all sections and there was a record entry of horses.
The overall sheep champion went to G. Davies & Partners of North Synton who collected the coveted Bob Munro Memorial Trophy. The Davies partnership lifted the overall Park sheep championship title which embraced South Country Cheviots, Park and Greyfaced and also the North Country Cheviot championship ticket.
Norman Douglas of Catslackburn took the South Country Cheviot honour while Easter Dawyk topped the Greyfaced championship and T. Renwick & Son from Blackhouse lifted the Blackfaced title.
The Renwicks collected almost all the Blackies’ silverwear with only S. McClymont from Tinnis denying them trophies in the group sections.
In the cattle sections honours were shared between McLymont, Douglas and A. Grieve of Helmburn.
The large entry in the horse section gave the judges a testing time and competition was equally keen in the industrial and garden classes.
Terrier racing proved once again to be a hilarious hit and the children’s races, pet show and vintage tractor display attracted well-merited attention.
Selkirk Silver Band and Melrose Pipe Band brought a welcome music note to the afternoon’s proceedings.
Secretary Anne commented: “A big thanks must go to the judges who had a hard job do to and were kept extremely busy. This was a brilliant show.”
The Yarrow and Ettrick Pastoral Society was founded in 1906 and 2012 was the society’s 92nd show.
