Nancy does the bussin-ness for Merchants
THE Flag of the Merchant Company was graciously bussed by Nancy Nichol, wife of Company Standard Bearer Mark Nichol.
But first Mrs Nichol invested her proud husband with his sash of office.
After tying the ribbons to the pole, she told the company in the Victoria Halls: “I now declare the Flag of Selkirk Merchant Company to be well and truly bussed for the year 2012.”
It was then handed to the Standard Bearer by Master Neville Dundas who charged him to carry and Cast with the dignity that befitted the occasion.
The Standard Bearer pledged: “I will endeavour to carry out my duties to the best of my abilities, to uphold the great traditions of this ancient Company and to maintain the high standards set by my predecessors.”
Watching the bussin’ was the Standard Bearer’s mum Beryl Nichol who had bussed her late husband Derek’s standard in 1969, the year Mark was born.
This year’s jubilee Standard Bearer is Jake Wheelans. Other milestones are Dr Chris Sharp (10); Jim Marshall (30); David Mitchell (35) and Tom Brown (40).
All the 2012 Standard Bearers attended the function and another guest was Kenneth Dunbar, Master of the Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh who was accompanied by his wife Janet.
