Planning officer gives thumbs up to Pringle Park plans

THE latest hurdle in the way of Pringle Park’s £300,000 playground plans is set to be negotiated on Monday, writes Kenny Paterson.

The scheme goes before Scottish Borders Council’s planning committee, with planning officer Andrew Evans recommending it be approved.

If committee members follow Mr Evans’ advice, the project – which has already raised £50,000 – would require a Big Lottery Fund application of £250,000 to be sanctioned in February for it to get the go ahead.

One local resident, Diana Murray, wrote to SBC to praise the idea but also brought up a number of concerns, including whether a safety barrier would be put in place, with Scott Crescent running alongside Pringle Park.

But writing to SBC, the project team said: “Play areas will not be fenced, as research shows that fencing does not stop the problem of animal fouling or broken glass.

“After a 10-year trial of swing areas without fencing, Stirling Council no longer uses fencing unless another hazard exists, such as a dangerous road.

“Without fencing there is no sense of where a play space starts and ends, making it more inviting to explore. Children can move easily from one area to another.”

Mr Evans’ report outlines that the play area would be split into three sections.

The eastern circle would include swings and monkey bars, the central circle a tractor tyre swing, rotating disc roundabout and large climbing frame, while the western circle would be aimed at younger children, with see-saw, slide, play hut and timber animals.

New footpaths would also be formed linking each circle, with a skateboard ramps and seating along the walkways.

The plan will get a 10-year deed of dedication from the Common Good Fund Working Group if it scheme goes ahead.

But among the seven conditions Mr Evans has attached to his approval recommendation is an adjustment to the submitted drainage plan, in order to protect nearby lime trees.
