Plattling visit was “humbling” says council chairman

THE community council has paid tribute to Selkirk’s renewed relationship with twin town Plattling, writes Kenny Paterson.

A party of 10 councillors from the German town visited the Royal Burgh last week, and members of the community council, including chairman Graham Easton, enjoyed a dinner with the Bavarians in the County Hotel.

Mr Easton said: “It was a really interesting evening to hear how things work with their town council, who have a lot more control and resources than ourselves.

“The relationship between the two towns has dropped off in past years but there are new members on both committees.”

Mr Easton also received a beer stein from the German visitors. “It was quite a humbling experience,” he added.

Fellow community councillor Tommy Combe said: “I have made 10 visits to Plattling and their hospitality is fantastic.”

The Plattling group visited a number of historic places in the Ettrick and Yarrow Valleys, as well as making a trip to the high school.

And they also enjoyed lunch with Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Donald Wilson, originally from Selkirk, pictured above left.
