FORTY firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a mansion house in the Scottish Borders, writes Bob Burgess.

Fire ripped the second and third floors as well as the roof of Fairnielee House at the Yair, near Caddonfoot, about six miles from Galashiels.

A turntable ladder from Sighthill fire station in Edinburgh joined five pumping appliances and specialist units at the burning house.

The alarm was raised shortly before 12.20pm and a spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service described the blaze as fierce.

She added: “When crews arrived they discovered a stone built, detached mansion house with a fire on the second and third floors and breaking through into the roof space.”

Both the police and the fire service confirmed there were no injuries. Some traffic diversions are in operation.

A fire investigation officer and a team of experts are heading for the scene to begin a probe into how the blaze started.

Building control inspectors and Scottish Power engineers are currently on site.
