Sign-cleaning kids win community council support

TWO big-hearted Selkirk youngsters have appealed for help in their effort to clean up their streets, writes Kenny Paterson.

Marnie Davidson, 10, of Corbie Terrace, and six-year-old Kerry Borthwick, who is currently on holiday with her grandparents, Irene and Bob Kerr at Cannon Street, wrote to the community council asking for two rusting signs on their addresses to be repaired.

In the letter, the pair wrote: “We wish to bring to your attention that the street signs need repainted. We have tried to clean them, but people have vandalised them.

“We are just children who would like to make you aware of this.”

Marnie told The Wee Paper: “We tried to scrub them with washing-up liquid and even used water pistols, but they were too dirty.”

Kerry, who lives at Crook of Devon in Perthshire, said: “They were bugs all over the signs, but we could not get them off.”

The letter from the two friends was read out at Monday’s community council meeting, with the organisation promising to ask Scottish Borders Council’s small works team to mend or replace the placards.

Marnie’s dad, Neil, told us: “We do get people getting mixed up as to which road is Corbie Terrace due to the state of the road signs.”
