Nichol retuns for Burns role
SELKIRK’S John Nichol returns home to conclude Ideoms’ alternative Burns Night Borders tour.
The actor and musician, who recited Tam O’ Shanter a record 11 times in four hours in Edinburgh two years ago, will feature alongside Yarrow Valley resident Hilary Bell, Ross Milligan and Jenni Borthwick at Bowhill Theatre tomorrow night and the County Hotel next Sunday, February 5.
The Honest Poverty tour centres on the year 1786, and Mossgiel Farm in rural Ayrshire.
Robert Burns was gaining notoriety as a rhymer and poverty still surrounded him, but the poet indulges in the simple pleasures. With money similarly tight for many families across the country in the current economic climate, Ideoms theatre company is recommending Souters take a leaf out of the Burns’ book and forget their worries for a night.
A spokesperson for the theatre group said: “This is not so much a performance as a party. It’s Burns without the lang-winded speeches, from the company which was launched in 2005 with the purpose of continuing the popular Burns shows at Bowhill Theatre – so successful that many Burns shows have been written and performed at Bowhill and beyond.”
Supper is served with both Selkirk performances (7.30pm starts), with a dram included in the Bowhill ticket price of £26.
