Rabbit caught in spotlight

The critically-acclaimed Selkirk quintet Frightened Rabbit have announced details of their new single, The Woodpile, which will be released January 28.

This week the Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe made it his Hottest Record in the World Right Now. The single will precede their eagerly-awaited fourth studio album, Pedestrian Verse, which is out on February 4 through Atlantic Records.

Music magazine NME called The Woodpile “Frightened Rabbit’s most ambitious work to date. It’s a fine build-up to the Selkirk quintet’s fourth album”.

The music critic from the Independent was equally effusive: “These blusteringly-brilliant Scots rockers continue their slow march to stardom.”

The indie rock band from the Royal Burgh formed in 2003, consisting of lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and lyricist Scott Hutchison, guitarist and bassist Billy Kennedy, guitarist Andy Monaghan, drummer Grant Hutchison and guitarist and keyboardist Gordon Skene.

Scott said: “The Woodpile took a deceptively-long time to come together. I think the recording that ended up on the record is version number five, and it was worth taking our time with it.

“It may be one of the most straightforward songs we’ve written to date, but those can often be harder to get right than the weirder ones. I wanted to write a big, brazen rock song about being lonely and socially awkward. I like that contrast.“

A few weeks ago, the band premiered a film which documented their April Highlands tour, and had sold-out screenings in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London.

They also recently announced a run of headline UK dates in February, their biggest UK tour to date.

It kicks off at Norwich’s Waterfront on February 8, taking in Birmingham, Portsmouth, Brighton, London (Forum), Cambridge, Bristol, Exeter, Stoke, Leeds, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Gateshead, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, before finishing up at Glasgow’s Barrowlands on February 28.
