THE Keystone Cops, Marilyn Monroe and the Wild West will all have a part to play in Selkirk Silver Band’s attempt to hit the winning note at tomorrow’s Scottish Brass Band Championships.

Staged in Perth Concert Hall, the event provides the Selkirk musicians with a chance to move up a grade to section two, as well as an opportunity to qualify for the British national finals which are held later in the year.

Principal cornet player Colin Kemp said: “We’re all really looking forward to the competition and hoping to do well. We’re a bit short in the cornet section at the moment, so that’s why I am playing instead of conducting. However, we’re lucky to have Alan Fernie available to take over, which he has done for the last few events.

“Alan is a fabulous composer and arranger and is now living in Selkirk, which is great.”

Colin says, despite being several players down, the band is coping. “If we manage to finish in the top three or four, we’d be delighted as we would move up to section two.”

All 11 bands in section three will be performing Goff Richards’ tune, Hollywood, which was specially composed for bands in competition.

“It’s a great piece and has everything in it, from the Keystone Cops to Marilyn Monroe and the Wild West,” added Colin.
