‘Tremendous’ result for band
SELKIRK Silver Band was one of a trio of Border bands which all scooped a top-four place in the section three competition of the weekend’s Scottish Brass Band Championships in Perth.
St Ronan’s Silver Band, from Innerleithen, was crowned third section Scottish champions, while the Royal Burgh musicians came just two points behind in third place, ahead of Peebles.
All 12 bands in section three were required to perform Goff Richards’ tune, Hollywood, which was specially composed for competitions.
St Ronan’s win qualifies it to compete in the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in Cheltenham in September.
Selkirk Silver band was conducted by Alan Fernie and cornet player Stuart Kemp says members were delighted with the result.
“We were short of players, so had to do a bit of reshuffling. But it still left some empty seats, so to come third was tremendous,” Stuart said.
