Green fingered and environmentally friendly – Milestone Garden Centre in the heart of the Scottish Borders

Ross Allan started Milestone as an independent garden centre in 2006 and has seen it grow in many ways as it has established its reputation in the Borders.

Ross came from a horticultural background and saw an opportunity to create a quality garden centre with plants at its heart in Newtown St Boswells.

About Milestone Garden Centre

The garden centre currently employs more than 60 local people and provides a great service delivering to people’s homes throughout the Borders.

Over the years Milestone has had many developments bringing it to the destination centre it currently is, these include:

– Building an onsite bakery to make the bread, cakes and traybakes sold in the café and Deli.

– An extension to the café doubling the capacity to 250 seats.

– An extension to the retail area allowing them to create a large houseplant area and a new deli and retail food section.

– Building a four-tunnel nursery to grow many of the shrubs and perennial plants sold in the garden centre. They will shortly be expanding the growing space so they can grow even more of their plants onsite.

Milestone also recently installed over 300 solar panels on the roof reducing the carbon footprint in addition to recycling all rainwater to water the plants and, they are about to increase the size of their irrigation tank to make them even more self-sufficient.

Big plans

The next part of the garden centre’s development is now underway and once completed will include a purpose-built car park, more than doubling the available spaces and a purpose-built state of the art plant area with an opening/closing roof. The roof will be climate controlled ensuring all the plants are always happy and healthy. This will also allow customers to shop in comfort throughout all the seasons and will expand the retail offering.
