Tweed Bridge wrangle sorted
A FORMER road bridge that has been closed to walkers and cyclists on safety grounds for a number of years has reopened, writes Bob Burgess.
And major repairs to Tweed Bridge – where the Ettrick Water joins the Tweed – will begin next year.
Scottish Borders Council and Holyrood’s Transport Scotland have been locked in protracted talks about which body was responsible for the bridge which once carried the A7 over the Tweed. Local councillor Vicky Davidson confirmed this week that Transport Scotland now accepted the crossing was their responsibility and had agreed to pay for repairs.
She told The Wee Paper: “This is great news as it reopens a popular cycling and walking route, and will also be very good news for the annual Vintage Car Rally as it will improve their access. Many people have asked me about this bridge over the years and it has been difficult to answer while negotiations were continuing with Transport Scotland. I’m delighted we have achieved such a good outcome and the deal will secure the future of the bridge.”
Crumbling led to it being sealed off but it has now been reopened to pedestrians and cyclists. Fencing will provide a safe passage along the centre.
Contractors BEAR will erect side supports to the leaning wings of the walls next year.
