Snow place like the Borders for showing community spirit
While Londoners panicked about a couple of inches of snow, if that, this week, Borderers no doubt raised their eyebrows in wry disbelief, as many of us battled through blizzards and five to eight inches of white stuff to ensure it was business as usual in the region.
While the amount of snow we’ve had this week is nothing out of the ordinary for us, what was above and beyond was the efforts people went to to ensure normal day-to-day business was resumed as soon as possible.
First vote of thanks should go to the numerous gritters and Scottish Borders Council staff who worked round the clock to ensure roads and pavements were cleared, and schools that could remain open did so, while ensuring pupil safety was paramount. And social work staff made sure vulnerable Borderers requiring care and attention received it.
SBC’s emergency planning seems to have paid dividends, with all the hard work ensuring the region got back on its feet as quickly as possible.
Thanks also must go to staff at the Borders General Hospital, many of whom would have travelled in difficult conditions to get to work.
And, as per usual, neighbours and friends were quick to rally round to help the vulnerable and elderly unable to get out to do their shopping.
We should never take any of this effort for granted, but it’s this attitude of going above and beyond that makes this region such a great place to live and work.
