Patients give practice a health check

SOUTERS were asked to give their views on the service they receive from Selkirk Medical Practice in the latest patient experience survey carried out on behalf of the Scottish Government, writes Mark Entwistle.

A total of 432 people registered as patients with the practice were sent questionnaires, with 157 responding.

The survey asked questions about people’s experiences during the past year about making an appointment, visiting the GP surgery, seeing staff, being prescribed medicines, out-of-hours healthcare and outcomes from NHS treatment.

Of the respondents, 53 per cent were male and 47 per cent female; eight per cent were aged 17-34, 17 per cent 35-49, 41 per cent 50-64 and 34 per cent 65 and over; and 63 per cent did not have any limiting illness or disability.

The survey was commissioned by Holyrood for Scotland’s Patient Experience Programme “Better Together”, which aims to use the public’s experiences of NHS Scotland to improve health services. The results will be used to focus on the areas that people say are important to them and where they consider they could be improved.

The majority of responses from the Selkirk patients were all in the 80 to 100 per cent range for level of positive experience in each of the categories people were asked about.

The top five questions (those with the highest percentage positive) were – the GP surgery is clean (99 per cent positive); patients took their prescription as they were supposed to (96 per cent); the nurse was considerate and understanding (95 per cent); patients have confidence in the nurse’s ability to treat them (95 per cent); patients have enough time with the nurse (95 per cent).

The bottom five questions were – can usually see preferred doctor (64 per cent positive); able to book a doctor’s appointment three or more working days in advance (71 per cent); it was easy to get through on the phone (81 per cent); patients are involved as much as they want to be in decisions about their care and treatment (81 per cent); overall arrangements for getting to see a doctor (52 per cent).
