Admitted assault

After celebrating New Year with friends, Selkirk’s Daniel Cairney assaulted a police constable and threatened other officers with violence.

Cairney, 24, of Buccleuch Road, admitted in court attempting to headbutt a police officer in a police vehicle travelling between St Boswells and Hawick on January 1.

He also admitted threatening police with violence and making abusive and offensive comments.

Defence solicitor Mat Patrick said alcohol counselling had helped Cairney “drastically reduce his drinking”, but on New Year’s day he had met with friends and “too much drink was taken”.

Cairney was sentenced to an 18-month Community Payback Order, with a condition he completes 160 hours of unpaid work.
