Another string to Hannah's fiddle

MIDLEM fiddler Hannah Borhan will represent the Borders in Rotary's Young Musician of the Year Scottish final in Edinburgh next month.

The 15-year-old came second in the regional heat at Selkirk High School on Friday night which means she goes forward to the next stage.

Hannah's proud mum, Katrina, said: "It will be a really good experience for her – I'm really pleased for her."

The Selkirk High School pupil started learning the violin with Riddell Fiddles when she was eight.

She has occasional lessons from renowned fiddler Catriona MacDonald, who also teaches on the BMus Folk degree at Newcastle University – and she is hoping to study traditional music at university.

Hannah won the open music competition at the first Selkirk Sessions traditional music festival in 2006 and is a two-time past winner at Denholm folk festival in 2007 and 2009.

The talented teenager and three other young traditional musicians got together to form the Fiddling CHIKs (the initials being from each of their first names). The tuneful quartet has performed at weddings and the CHIKs featured on Radio Borders' Sunday Gaitherin' last weekend.

Mrs Borhan said: "It's really difficult to pinpoint Hannah's sound.

"It has quite a warmth about it – and she's quite good at hitting the right notes!

"But she enjoys it – that's the main thing – and I think that comes across."

Perhaps Hannah's musical talent has come from her personal trainer/pilates teacher mum, for singer-songwriter Mrs Borhan plays guitar.

Hannah's father, Hadi, is in IT and her brother, Ali, 14, also at Selkirk High School, has the musical gene too, for he plays the accordion.
