'Big cat' among February crimes
RECORDED crime in Selkirk is down and detection rates are on the increase, the town's community council heard on Monday.
PC Lesley Shiell said 14 crimes were reported to police in February, 11 of which (78 per cent) had been solved.
The overall detection rate for the year so far is 65 per cent, compared to 58 per cent for the first two months of 2009. Over the same period, recorded crime fell by 13 per cent.
The February offences included five under misuse of drugs legislation, two vandalisms, three crimes of dishonesty and one case of cruelty to children.
PC Shiell said two males had been charged with breaking into a number of premises within the town and stealing property.
However, police are still seeking information into an incident at Sainsbury’s when a male and female stole a large quantity of money from the till after distracting a member of staff.
“Enquiries are ongoing to trace the culprits, who we believe may have carried out similar crimes in other areas,” said PC Shiell.
She also reported that a man had recently been charged over the alleged theft of a car in January.
And she revealed that, on February 10, police in Selkirk received a report of the alleged sighting of a large black animal “believed to be of the feline variety” crossing the A7 from the Oregon Timber Frame site into the wooded area at the rear of Spion Kop.
“The animal was not found and no further sightings have been reported,” she added.
