Bowhill fashions event for sartorial scarecrows
Examples of what can be achieved as far as scarecrow dress sense is concerned are currently on display at Bowhill
BOWHILL has launched a hunt for Selkirk's best-dressed scarecrow, with the winner claiming 100.
The winner will be decided by public vote at the estate's harvest festival on Sunday, September 26, and is open to anybody.
Bowhill countryside ranger Lynsey Menmuir said: "We're currently displaying scarecrows at Bowhill to show people the possibilities. One is made of branch and tree roots, another is made entirely of packaging materials - anything that comes through your letter box, like jiffy bags, red elastic bands and bubble wrap."
Kirkhope, Ettrick and Lauder primary schools are making their own as part of the Curriculum of Excellence, as it teaches pupils about recycling.
Lochcarron is sponsoring the competition's cash prize, while scarecrows created will decorate a walking trail around Bowhill's loch.
Sarah Peat, of the Bowhill Heritage Trust, said: "The harvest festival will be a traditional one with musicians, barn dance lessons, sheep dog displays, craft stalls, and the house will be open especially for people to see."
Meanwhile, tomorrow sees Bowhill host its first ever reivers and archers day. Costumed swordfighting will be centre stage, courtesy of the Border Clansmen Re-enactment Society, together with longbow action from the Ettrick Forest Archers.
The afternoon event will allow members of the public of all ages to watch demonstrations by the experts before having a go themselves.
Lynsey said: "We're really looking forward to the reivers and archers event because it's representative of the estate's history and also fun because all the family can take part - for reiving, adults can use the real swords and plastic versions will be on hand for kids."
