Carbon post 'good news'
"SELKIRK needs people with enthusiasm and a positive belief in the future of the town," says Ian King, one of the four directors of the recently formed Selkirk Regeneration Company.
Mr King, who also chairs the community council’s planning sub-group, is hoping for a good turnout at the SRC’s next meeting – in the Prince Leopold Room of the County Hotel at 7pm on Tuesday.
“We would welcome anyone interested in joining SRC or becoming involved to come, especially at this time when we are developing ideas for future and long-term projects.”
In the short term, the charitable-status company is preparing an application for funding to appoint a carbon-reduction officer with the dual aim of reducing Selkirk’s carbon footprint and raising awareness of energy issues with local residents.
“This is in line with one of our founding principles,” said fellow director Kirsten Scott, the solicitor who is heading the community council’s bid for a complete, accurate register of all Selkirk’s common good assets from trustees Scottish Borders Council.
“That principle is to promote and enhance environmental protection and improvement within our community, including the preservation of the natural environment and the maintenance and provision of environmental amenities.”
SRC director David Bethune told us: “Funding for a carbon-reduction officer will allow us to get this exciting project under way.
“The officer will work with householders to help each of us reduce our carbon footprint.
“That’s good news for the town in economic terms and good news for the environment.”
Fellow director Dr Lindsay Neil said the meeting will also be given an update on the development of the community hub at 1 Tower Street.
“We are looking for new members who share our vision for our town,” added Dr Neil.
