Club savours its first bowl of haggis
SELKIRK Bowling Club – founded in 1885 – held what is believed to be its first Burns supper on Saturday.
There was a full house in the club rooms and the evening was chaired by club president Gordon Munro.
The Immortal Memory was proposed by ex-Standard Bearer and Common Riding Trust clerk Johnnie Thomson.
Wee Paper journalist Bob Burgess proposed The Lassies with a reply from Scottish Borders Council’s equal opportunities officer Louise McLennan. Local garage boss Jim Thomson recited Tam o’ Shanter. The haggis was carried in by Donny MacLeod, escorted by piper David Turnbull and addressed by Bob.
A meal of haggis, tatties and turnip was provided by butcher Lindsay Grieve and the entertainment was led by John Irvine. A vote of thanks was proposed by Colin McKinnon.
