Daring dozen brave the loch

Daring dozen brave the loch

charity swimmers are taking the plunge in St Mary's Loch this weekend.

The 12 from Galashiels will undertake one-mile relays to cover the three-mile length of the loch tomorrow.

And they hope, along with a charity golf event, to raise thousands for Prostate Scotland.

Organiser Gillian McCrirrick said: "We're feeling quite anxious, but we're looking forward to the challenge and hoping it's not windy on the day."

Selkirk Canoe Club paddlers and the loch's angling club are going to provide support for the intrepid swimmers, along with the Galashiels pool lifeguards.

And Tibbie Shiels Inn is putting on a paid barbecue for the paddlers and their supporters.

The team - Ian Thomson, Elaine Turnbull, Duncan Sinclair, Bruce McClory, Danny Kelly, Timmy Lamb, Alistair Douglas, Wilson Jamieson, Kay McFarlane, Donald McNeil, Scott Cranston and Gillian - has been training since February and the swimmers have tried to train all together at least once a week.

They range in age from their 20s to their 50s; some are hoping to complete the full 3.3 miles as individuals and they've had help from coach David Scullion.

But a scheduled practice swim in the loch last Thursday had to be cancelled as lightning was forecast.

All the money raised for the national charity will be spent in the Borders. For further information on prostate cancer see www.prostatescotland.org.uk
