WRI: President Lucile MacLeod welcomed members and guest speakers, Julia and Lana, plus Bramble the dog, from the Borders Animal Welfare Association, based at Earlston. Julia and Lana are volunteers and told members about the association, how they look after animals, and rehome and rehabilitate them. The

snowball raffle was won by Helen Johnson. Competition – animal photograph – 1, Lily Bernard; 2, Irene McFadzen; 3, Liz Bernard. Tuesday’s meeting, which starts at 7.30pm, will feature Marjorie Tennant and her subject – hats.

Ettrickbridge

WRI: Members enjoyed a demonstration on cheesemaking by Jim Shanks, Standhill Farm. Competitions – cheese scones – 1, Celia Wilson; 2, Dawn Balmer; 3, Margaret Cummings. Cheese knife – 1, Alison Blackadder; 2, Dawn Balmer; 3, Marjory Tennant. There is a syllabus alteration for Wednesday’s meeting – in place of the cake decoration demonstration (which has been postponed until the April meeting), an illustrated talk (originally planned for April) will be given by Ashley Baird. Competitions remain unaltered – three shaped shortbread biscuits and a cake slice.

Midlem

WRI: Members meet on Tuesday when there will be a demonstration by April’s Unique Hats. Competitions – homemade brooch and chocolate sponge.

Yarrow

WRI: Annual whist drive results – ladies – 1, Hope Ballantyne; 2, Georgie Richardson; 3, Elma Young; consolation, Nancy Hamilton. Gents – 1, Derek Brown; 2, Lily Bernard; 3, Jean Scott; consolation, Annie Coltherd. The hostess prize was won by Margaret Watson. The next meeting, in the hall on Tuesday, will feature a talk on beekeeping.
