Ewe beauty! – a debut delight

A Selkirk ewe – on her first outing – scooped one of the top tickets at the Border Union Show in Kelso last weekend.
The three-crop Lairg-type Cheviot, produced at Philiphaugh Old Mill and shown by shepherd Alan Wilson, first won its breed championship and then went on to take the reserve sheep interbreed award at Springwood Park.
Asked what he liked about her, delighted farmer Alan Cowens said: “She’s just an all-round good ewe. There’s plenty of body about her, lovely white hair on her head and she stands really well. She’s very good on her legs and she’s a good type of hill ewe.”
The homebred animal is by Northhouse Northern Lights out of a Ribigill-bred ewe. Mr Cowens may show her at Yetholm Shepherds’ Show in October.
Other local farmers also had a good day.
Yarrow Valley producer Norman Douglas, of Catslackburn, won reserve champion Cheviot with a two-shear tup. Blackface breeder Sam McClymont of Tinnis, Yarrow, gained best opposite sex to the champion with a one-shear tup and Steven Renwick of Craig Douglas, Yarrow, took the reserve Texel championship with a gimmer. Bryan Walling of Over Whitlaw, Selkirk, also emerged triumphant, clinching the reserve breed champion with his Lleyn shearling ewe.
And it was a daughter of North Country Cheviot ram Synton Bullseye, bred by Selkirk farmers Jock and Scott Davies of North Synton, that took the sheep interbreed ticket for Roderick Runciman of Allanshaws, Galashiels.
Meanwhile, Tom Tennant, Gilmanscleuch, Ettrick, scooped two top Clydesdale prizes, winning the championship with his young gelding Singlie Statesman and reserve with another gelding, Solo.
Berwick couple Andrew and Gillian McCowan’s hunter Fusilier took the champion of champions honours, judged by Kelso farmer Jim Jeffrey, while the reserve went to a rabbit owned by John and Carole Fletcher from Woolsingham, County Durham.
And the Berwick mother and son team of Helen Redden and Anthony Renton of Clarence House, Shielfield, won the cattle interbreed ticket with their prize-winning Limousin cow, Lodge Blush, with calf at foot
