KIRSTEN FIRES UP YOUNGSTERS’ OLYMPIC SPIRIT AS SHE RELAYS TORCH EXPERIENCE
Olympic Torch Relay Roadie Kirsten Scott and olympic torch bearer through Selkirk last Thursday John Steede paid a visit to Philiphaugh community School nursery and P1 pupils on Wednesday to talk about their experience.
SELKIRK’S Kirsten Scott paid a visit to Philiphaugh Primary to recall her Olympic Torch experience, writes Kenny Paterson.
The Careline Services worker was chosen to join the Olympic Torch Relay team as a roadie as it passed through the Borders.
She boarded the Bank of Scotland open top bus from Edinburgh last Thursday and travelled with the convoy, and spent the day rallying the crowds of people waiting for the flame.
She was chosen thanks to her year-long work on the Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relay projects and visited Philiphaugh alongside Jedburgh veteran athlete John Steede, who carried the torch through the Royal Burgh, as part of the initiative.
Kirsten said: “It was completely amazing coming up The Green into the Market Place on the top deck of the Bank of Scotland open top bus. As we came into the square I saw my daughter Cora and Roland, my fiancée, waving and then saw my friends recognise me.
“To be honest I was overwhelmed by the amount of people all the way up The Green, in the Market Place, and down the main road to The Toll where colleagues from Careline were waiting to see the Olympic flame.”
Kirsten’s Careline manager, Fiona Macleod, said: “Kirsten has spoken to so many people with remarkable stories and has co-ordinated the Adopt a Torchbearer project where torch bearers and a representative from the bank visit local community projects and schools to talk about their nomination and what it means to be a torchbearer.
“For so many people it helps to bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life.”
