Native tree boost as BFT make most of grant cash

vallEYS beyond Yarrow will be planted with nearly 1million worth of native trees in the next 18 months.

Environmental charity Borders Forest Trust (BFT) has been given 927,620 from the Scottish Government and European Union's Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) to create woodland habitat in three valleys at Corehead Farm near Moffat.

The trust's director Willie McGhee said: "This award will enable one of the south of Scotland's most significant conservation projects to get under way and we are very grateful to the Scottish Government."

Planting is due to start in the autumn and the charity hopes to complete work on the 104 hectares of oak, ash, birch, willow, rowan, hazel and holly over this and next year.

The public donated the 700,000 needed to buy the 1,580-acre farm last year. It includes the famous Devil's Beef Tub where reivers once hid stolen cattle.

Part of the SRDP funding will also go towards improving access on the site, creating paths and installing finger-post signs for walkers.

Wildlife monitoring is under way to identify species are at Corehead.

A conservation volunteering day takes place every Wednesday and guided walks are planned. More information is available from Corehead site manager Glenwright on 07912 423724.
