OBE honour for Selkirk nursing boss Eileen
SELKIRK medic Eileen Moir was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours.
The 54-year-old was celebrating the festive season in her native Shetland islands as the award for her services to nursing and health care was announced.
She told The Wee Paper: “It came as a complete surprise and a real shock, but I am over the moon that those who nominated me, whoever they are, felt that the contribution I have made has been of that level.”
Mrs Moir was director of nursing at NHS Borders from 2001 until 2007, after which she took up a post with what is now Health Improvement Scotland.
After five years, she left the position to start up her own health improvement consultancy business earlier this year.
She and husband Andy, an occupational therapist, live in Selkirk and Mrs Moir says she only found out a few weeks ago she was being honoured.
After leaving Shetland, Mrs Moir worked in Aberdeen for 13 years before heading south to the Borders, where she worked closely with the likes of former NHS Borders chief executive, John Glennie, and past chairman, Tony Taylor.
“I have loved living in the Borders as I get the same sense of community here that I grew up with in Shetland.
“That is why I will be very pleased if this award also focuses some attention on the good work being done in health care in the Borders and those working there.”
Mrs Moir says it is only early days for her own consultancy business and that it has proved a steep learning curve so far.
“But I am enjoying it and working with organisations across the whole of Scotland,” she said. “The work I do now is really underpinned by what I did in the Borders.”
