Patrols catch out dog offenders

A DAWN raid on dog fouling was launched in Selkirk last Thursday in the war against owners who fail to clean up after their pets.
Councils wardens hit the streets at 7am and continued to prowl for nine-and-a-half hours.
The high-visibility patrols were carried out after complaints about problems in various areas of the burgh, including parks and playing fields.
The five wardens covered known hot spots, including Pringle Park, Brierylaw and Shawfield cemeteries, Elm Park, Riverside Road, Burnmill Cottages, sports grounds, Bannerfield playing fields and Bleachfield Road.
Council officials said that the wardens spotted 20 people picking up after their dogs and two fixed penalty notices were issued to offenders in Bridge Street and Victoria Park.
Keith Taylor, senior warden with Scottish Borders Council said: “We have conducted these patrols in Selkirk, Hawick and Galashiels.
“Not only do we plan to revisit these areas but we will also be carrying similar patrols in other towns and villages over the coming months.”
Councillor Len Wyse, executive member for environmental services said: “These patrols give us the opportunity to talk to local people about dog fouling and any particular areas of concern.
“It also shows we continue to take this issue seriously and that we will not tolerate dog fouling in the Borders.”
The wardens spoke to members of the public throughout the day and met the three local councillors to discuss dog fouling in the town. There was no advance warning of Thursday’s patrols.
