the week

Although I'm a person who will have a go at most things, I don't do nautical in any form. I get seasick just sitting on the beach looking at the ocean, so it is odd that I have always been a great fan of the RNLI. I will always reach into my pocket when the collecting can comes round, and the fact that the RNLI is totally supported by voluntary contributions is a big part of my constant respect for the work they do.

I cherish a dream of winning the Euro Lotto and buying them a whole lifeboat, launched by me with a bottle of Buckfast and called The Pilgrim. Dream on.

So, a biography this week, of Sir William Hillary, a Manxman who can be seen as the father of the RNLI who campaigned relentlessly to set up the Institution which has grown into what is probably the world's most respected rescue organisation.

Hillary's life and times are inextricably entwined with the Isle of Man, and in his book, For Those in Peril, author Robert Kelly, also a Manxman gives a fascinating insight into this comparatively unknown hero.

Worth a read.
