Report praises Selkirk nursery
AN INSPECTION report has praised Knowepark Primary School Nursery in Selkirk, just seven months after several complaints about the service were upheld.
An unannounced inspection of the nursery was carried out in mid-January, with the Care Inspectorate report published recently.
In the report the inspector, Linda Smith, rated both the quality of care and support and quality of environment as ‘good’.
In June last year, four complaints about the nursery were upheld by the Care Inspectorate, relating to communication between staff and parents, security, general health and welfare, and record keeping.
Ms Smith said in her report: “We found Knowepark School Nursery provided a happy and caring environment. Management was committed to the ongoing development of the service.”
She added: “Since the last inspection and visit to the service a depute head teacher has been in post. The experienced depute has been instrumental in revamping the nursery environment...and the nursery accommodation appears more organised and structured.”
Ms Smith praised the depute’s implementation of new initiatives, including a forest nursery project.
The inspector also noted improved security at the nursery which meant children could not leave without the knowledge of staff.
She concluded: “Knowepark Primary School Nursery offers children a happy and stimulating educational environment where they can learn through play.”
Ms Smith also acknowledged that a number of recommendations from two inspections last year had been met, but did recommend that staff sign risk assessments to acknowledge they had seen, read and understood them.
Gillian McKenzie, senior education officer at Scottish Borders Council, who provide the service, said: “We are very pleased that the improvements that have been made are having a positive impact and that the nursery provides a happy and stimulating educational environment.”
