Road damage hard to bear
JUST five months after the A7 in Selkirk's town centre was resurfaced at a cost of £60,000, contractors will return later this month to repair two major sections which have become badly degraded.
“I certainly hope they do a better job than they did last time,” said Councillor Kenneth Gunn (SNP, Selkirkshire) who has been pressing BEAR Scotland, which maintains the Scottish trunk road network, for action.
Mr Gunn told us he had received confirmation from Ian Stewart, the firm’s operating company representative in the south-east, that work to resurface two key sections – at the Fleece Hotel, where Ettrick Terrace joins Market Place, and at the foot of Tower Street – will get under way during the week commencing Sunday February 21.
“The work is expected to last two days and I understand it will take place through the night as it did last time,” said Mr Gunn.
He said the new surface had started breaking up even before the big freeze which began in mid-December.
However, Mr Gunn claimed that the subsequent snow and ice had exacerbated the problem, with more potholes appearing and pavements, alongside the A7, in “a colossal mess”.
“Many slabs need replaced on these footways and that is BEAR’s responsibility, but so far I have still to meet company representatives to inspect the damage,” explained Mr Gunn.
“As soon as that happens I will be pressing for the repairs to be carried out as a matter of urgency. This is a serious safety issue.”
