Storms force early closure of schools
SCHOOLS across Selkirk and the Valleys were closed early yesterday as storms battered the area.
All primary schools and Selkirk High were shut at lunchtime after the Met Office issued their highest warning of red. Gale-force winds up to 90mph and heavy rain battered the south of Scotland, peaking between 3-6pm, causing structural damage to buildings and uprooting trees. Parents were told in text messages on Wednesday night of yesterday’s early closures.
A spokesman for Scottish Borders Council said: “The decision was made following information from police, our transport providers and the Met Office.”
The second night of the High School’s Christmas production, Jingle All The Way, was postponed last night and rescheduled for Monday at 7.30pm. A spokesperson for the school said: “All tickets for Thursday’s performance will be valid for Monday night.”
The town’s Christmas lights were switched off on Scottish Borders Council instructions.
