Swimming Cub Ivan’s splash on Radio 2
Selkirk Cub Ivan Burt-Smith might be on television next week.
For the young fundraiser’s mum Jan said Border Television hoped to be at her son’s marathon swim finish on Tuesday at 6.30pm (when all supporters are welcome).
Ivan is swimming the equivalent of the width of the English Channel (22 miles) in the town’s pool to raise money towards reslating the Mill Street Scout hall roof – and the Kirkhope primary schoolboy has just 148 of his 1,416 lengths to go.
Jan said: “He had a bit of a slow start this week because he’s got a cough, but he did a mile (over 60 lengths) on Tuesday night.”
But a highlight for the youngster came on Saturday when he was on the same Radio 2 sports bulletin as Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini – Jan revealed: “Ivan is a big Man City fan and he was thrilled!”
Now she is urging supporters to email the Simon Mayo programme to lobby for Ivan to be interviewed by Radio 2 sports reporter Matt Williams.
And Jan says Ivan may have raised more than £1,000 towards the roof repairs, with £150 promised by an Australian friend.
Jan added: “It’s wonderful. I think he deserves a lot for what he is doing – it would be nice if we could get £1 for every length.”
