SELKIRK primary school children recently thanked someone even younger than themselves, writes Sally Gillespie.

Philiphaugh Community School’s P3 pupils said a big ‘thank you’ to one of the Borders’ tiniest teachers at a baby celebration held at their school by the charity, Action for Children Scotland, and Scottish Borders Council.

The event marked the end of the school year for Roots of Empathy, a programme to encourage children to interact in a nurturing manner by bringing a baby – known as a ‘tiny teacher’ – and parent into the classroom.

The programme was introduced to Philiphaugh and four other primary schools in the Borders by Action for Children Scotland last year.

The charity’s Paul Carberry said: “Classroom visits by the baby and parent are at the heart of Roots of Empathy, helping schoolchildren to better understand their own feelings and the feelings of others.”

Local pupils thanked visiting 11-month-old Ethan by writing wishes for his future and hanging them on a special wish tree at the celebration.

Ethan and mum Claire (pictured with P3 pupil Shannon Mack) visited nine times over the year, when an instructor guided pupils in labelling the baby’s emotions in a bid to raise levels of empathy and reduce aggression among schoolchildren.
