Trapped in Kansas joy at award win

TRAPPED in Kansas, the Ayr-based rock band which counts Selkirk's Gregor Fair as a member, has picked up a Scottish Alternative Music Award.

The four-piece collected the gong for Best Rock and Alternative band from DJ Jim Gellatly and comedian Billy Kirkwood in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Classic Grand in Glasgow.

They scored 550 votes out of a total of 4,000 cast for four awards through an online poll conducted by event organiser Richy Muirhead, who is on the same commercial music course at the University of the West of Scotland as Gregor.

And despite a mix-up which left Gregor walking home with an award more reminiscent of a Boys’ Brigade table tennis title, the night was deemed a success.

Gregor said: “It was a really good night. It was run as part of a university project but was very professional.

“We spoke to Jim Gellatly after the awards and he is a nice guy. He says he likes us but rarely plays our music – I think he reckons we are a bit of a wild card as he prefers pop bands.

“Apparently, Richy had arranged for impressive metal awards to be handed out but his friend who was making them let him down and as a result he had to rush round to a sports shop and buy some cheap ones.

“But the award is still sitting in pride of place on top of our TV, smelling of champagne.”

Gregor and his bandmates return to the Classic Grand on April 25 for a Road to Rockness gig where they will hope to impress the Highland festival’s organiser sufficiently to book their place at the event for the second year in a row.

Before then, Trapped in Kansas will head to Paris on April 15 to play gigs as part of an exchange programme after French students voted them number one out of a selection of Scottish acts.

“I am really excited,” added Gregor. “We have to sell tickets for the gig beforehand but we were chosen as the favourite band so I don’t think that will be too hard.”

Unfortunately, fellow Souters Liam Rutherford and Jonny Beveridge of The Darien Venture missed out on the Best Newcomer award to As Darkness Falls, but they will play two gigs alongside Trapped in Kansas in the next two months.
