Volunteer committee calls on public support for Haining

HE was involved in organising Leamington Peace Festival for 12 years, which annually saw crowds of 100,000 flock to the Warwickshire spa town for the free event, writes Kenny Paterson.

But Deryck Henley, one the Haining’s new volunteer committee members, is not underestimating the level of work needed to renovate the Selkirk house and estate.

A designer who owns Flights of Fancy at Linglie Mill, Henley moved to Selkirk nearly four years ago, having lived in Leamington Spa for 27 years.

He is now calling on locals to get involved, starting with the public meeting on Thursday, August 23.

Deryck said: “The volunteer committee has always been open to people coming in and helping out.

“There are ditches that need digging and trees that are blocking paths and need moving.

“There is nobody doing this at the moment. It is lovely that it has been opened up for the people of Selkirk to walk around the grounds, but there is a lot of maintenance that needs done.

“The public meeting will see us put a cry out for people to come and help in whatever role.

“So if there are people out there who have skills who could spare an hour or so to help out, it will go a long way.”

Widely-known Selkirk figure Viv Ross hopes the announcement of a volunteer committee and subsequent meeting will help the public feel part of the project.

She told us: “We hope to goodness people will come along to this public meeting and ask the questions they want answered.

“[Trustee] Susan Edington had the volunteers down one night and talked us through what had happened to date, what the plans were and when work will likely to start, and it was great.

“You came away feeling involved and you knew what was going on, and I think that is what the people in the town need to know.

“This is for the people of Selkirkshire and we need them enthusiastically involved.”
