Work halts on church windows

WORK to install the restored historic stained glass window above the altar in the Church of Our Lady and St Joseph has been halted temporarily due to the trades holidays.

The church has been raising funds to fix all of its stained glass windows, which were in danger of collapsing if no restoration work was carried out.

The round window depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary, directly above the sanctuary, has been judged the most precarious case and it is the one being worked on first.

Dougie Turnbull, chairman of the local Parish Council, told The Wee Paper that three-quarters of the repaired window had now been reinstalled.

He added:“But with it being the trades fortnight, the scaffolders are on holiday which means work has had to be halted on putting back the final section of the window.

“The restorers can’t do anymore at the moment, as they need the support of the scaffolders, in case the scaffolding has to be adjusted or moved closer.

“But a couple of other smaller jobs have been done in the meantime, including painting the window framework with oxide and some masonry repairs inside.

“The parts of the window which have been reinstalled so far look fabulous and, hopefully, the remaining part will be fitted the week after the holidays finish.”

The cost of repairing this one window alone is £3,000, with £7,000 the price of refurbishing the remaining windows.
