Have your say

Selkirk’s Colonial Society has named its Standard Bearer for 2014 as Kenny W Thomson from New Zealand.

The youngest son of Georgie (The Bog) Thomson, formally of The Bog Cottage, Selkirk, and Mabel Thomson (nee Parkhill) of Yarrowford, Kenny was born in Selkirk, but now lives in New Zealand where he has spent most of his life.

Kenny’s family now claims a hat-trick of Colonial Standard Bearers: his father Georgie was Colonial Standard Bearer 50 years ago in 1964, and his brother George was also Colonial Standard Bearer in 2012.

Kenny has experienced a few Common Ridings, the most recent being 2012. He also spent a short time living and working in the town, the last time being in 1977 when he worked at the former Ettrick and Yarrow Spinning Mill.

He is a self-employed arborist(or tree surgeon) and has been in the business for the last 25 years. Kenny has two children, Eva and Cameron, and lives with his partner Karen. The Standard Bearer’s Lady Busser will be his sister June Cox and both are looking forward to their big day in June.

Any applicant for the role should be a Souter who has lived, and continues to live, overseas for at least two years, or a blood descendant of a Souter.
Selkirk Colonial Society would be delighted to hear of any returning exiles or overseas visitors to this year’s Common Riding.
