Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, will officially open the Margaret Kerr Unit at Borders General Hospital on Thursday, May 16.

The £4.1 million palliative care facility accepted its first patients in January after Borderers helped raise the final £1m during a 16-month campaign.

The Duke of Gloucester has previously visited Dryburgh Abbey for Founder’s Day in 2008 to honour Field-Marshal Earl Haig, who is buried there.
