SCOTTISH Borders Council will launch its Youth Employment Scotland scheme today which it is hoped will lead to long-term jobs for young people.
Barnardo’s Works East has been appointed by the council to deliver the scheme.
The project will help local businesses create up to 80 new jobs by providing grants of half of the salary costs for a six month period.
The scheme will target job-ready young people aged 16-24 who have been unemployed for up to six months and have had difficulty in securing employment.
Councillor Stuart Bell, the council’s executive member for economic development, said: “We are delighted to bring on board Barnardo’s Works East to deliver our local Youth Employment Scotland scheme.
“Their track record and commitment will prove invaluable in supporting employers to develop new posts for young people.”
Councillor Bell added: “With funding to support up to 80 new placements, I am sure this will provide a great opportunity to provide real work experience for young people as well as help businesses develop and grow.
“In the current financial climate, it’s so difficult for young people to get a foothold on the career ladder and these placements will provide an ideal stepping stone to other employment opportunities.”
Funding of £250,000 has been confirmed from the Scottish Government and European Union which will support the job placements.
The scheme is open for applications until March 31, 2014 with job placements running until the end of September 2014.
Barnardo’s Works East will work with local partners, including the Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses, Skills Development Scotland, Job Centre Plus and Scottish Borders Business Gateway to encourage small businesses to create these new job opportunities for young people.
Local businesses can register their interest by emailing their contact details to YESScheme@scotborders.gov.uk or by calling 01835 825600.
