Jobs axed at Selkirk mill

TARTAN specialists DC Dalgliesh are shedding six jobs at their Dunsdale Mill in Selkirk, writes Bob Burgess.

Eight positions in all have been lost, but the company says two new full-time jobs are being created which can be applied for by staff affected by the redundancy decision.

Dalgliesh and Edinburgh-based Scotweb have the same owners, but operate separately, the directors stress.

A statement issued by managing director Dr Nick Fiddes states: “These unavoidable changes are largely attributable to some old machinery and working practices inherited, which had hardly changed in five decades when the current owners rescued the loss-making business from closure in 2011. In particular, key equipment for some processes was found not to be fit for purpose, even after extensive overhaul, with parts and specialist skills no longer available. The directors have personally funded the consequent losses to protect the entire workforce in recent years, but it has become clear this could not be sustained.”

It adds: “The directors are confident that these current changes are a regrettable, but necessary step, both to safeguard the majority of the workforce today and in enabling the DC Dalgliesh business to be a long-term success story for Selkirk and Scotland.”
