SELKIRK councillor Michelle Ballantyne has backed calls for more to be done to attract new businesses to Galashiels.
Galashiels councillor Bill White last week branded part of his town – including Channel Street – a disaster area because of the number of empty shops.
He told SBC’s economic development group that incentives should be offered in order that the shops can be filled before the railway opens next year.
He was supported by Councillor Ballantyne. She commented: “If we are creating the hub point at Galashiels we have to get Gala right in order to get the rest of the Borders right, because that will be the entry point.
“Once people arrive and can touch the tourist information screens that are going to be there, they are much more likely to stay and move outwards. We need to be less parochial in order to get the benefits for everybody.”
Councillor White told us: “It was good to get encouragement from other members that we need to do something in Gala.”
