Night of cups, ties and cheques

Have your say

Selkirk’s Ex-Standard Bearers’ Association held the Annual Cup night in the town’s Conservative Club last Saturday.

Chairman Keith Riddell presided over the evening of song and verse, first presenting The Selkirk Junior Silver Band with a cheque for £500 from the Ex-Standard Bearers’ Association, raised in part by last year’s events marking the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden.

Royal Burgh Standard Bearer Greg MacDougall signed the roll of honour, joining the Ex-Standard Bearers’ Association, with its distinctive Fletcher tie.

The evening’s speaker, 2013 Ex-Soldiers’ Standard Bearer David Deacon, gave an interesting and amusing insight into his involvement with Selkirk Common Riding since arriving in the town.

Ex-Standard Bearer Alasdair Craig was presented with the Ex-Standard Bearers’ Cup for winning their race at the Rig on Common Riding day, and he thanked everyone who helped ensure the course was in good order. A second race meeting is planned in August.

Ex-Standard Bearer Gavin Henderson then received the James Scott Memorial Trophy for coming second in the race. The final award of the night was the Pat Wilson Trophy for coming last in the race: awarded to Royal Burgh Standard Bearer Greg MacDougall. The vote of thanks was given by Ex-Standard Bearer Douglas Gunn.
