Some may have been expecting it, but there was still shock for fans with news that Selkirk stalwart Fraser Harkness is to move to Jed-Forest.

The news was broken on Saturday, the day of Jed-Forest’s sevens tournament, by the Riverside Park club on its official Twitter feed, which stated: “Jed-Forest RFC are pleased to announce that Fraser Harkness will be joining us for next season.”

In response to the news, Selkirk posted a comment from club president, John Rutherford, on its website, which stated: “Unfortunately I cannot comment on this, because Fraser has not informed me or the club he is officially leaving.”

Harkness, who captained Selkirk in 2010/2011, made 265 senior appearances for the club.

His 1st XV debut was against Melrose on May 8, 2003, while still a Youth Club player, and his final game for Selkirk was against Biggar at Hartreemill on March 8, 2014. He scored a total of 141 tries for the club.

Harkness has been unavailable for comment this week and neither Selkirk or Jed-Forest has made any further official statement on the issue.

Ironically, the last first round tie at tomorrow’s Walkerburn Sevens sees Selkirk drawn to take on Jed-Forest.
